Cultures in Movement: New Visions, New Conceptual Paradigms - Naples - 26 June, 2017
By Katrina O'Loughlin on 01 May 2017
The first seminar in the new Entangled Histories series, ‘Cultures in Movement: New Visions, New Conceptual Paradigms’ will be convened by Giovanni Tarantino and Luisa Simonutti this summer in Naples.
At the same time that the Centre for the Study of Emotions in Cross-Cultural Exchange (ECCE) has been forming, our colleagues from across a number of European and Australian universities have been developing an exciting new research network with a focus on movement and exchange in the Mediterranean: Entangled Histories of Emotions in the Mediterranean World.
The first seminar in the Entangled Histories series will be convened by Giovanni Tarantino and Luisa Simonutti in June 2017 at Naples:
Cultures in Movement: New Visions, New Conceptual Paradigms
Date: Monday, 26 June 2017
Time: 9am-6pm
Venue: Società Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti, Napoli, Via Mezzocannone 8.
Taking up the mantle of Braudel’s ‘Mediterranean world’, this seminar focuses on the reciprocal legacies and entangled histories of the region as a way to move beyond the unitary logic of categories like ‘orientalism’: to reconsider, as the convenors suggest, the Mediterranean not as ‘a barrier but a point of contact between different and plural cultures’.
This is the first in a series of linked seminars which will be hosted in Naples, Split, Perth, Budapest, and Florence across 2017 and 2018. ECCE is delighted to be a collaborating partner in this international research project, and will co-host the second seminar ‘Portals: Spaces of Encounter, Entanglement, and Exchange’ in Split in September 2017.
